Most wallpaper problems are not caused by the wallpaper but by the substrate and the workmanship. The symptom usually reveals the cause, and the cause can be fixed for good.

Seven problems, seven causes

  • Small bubbles on day one: usually normal. As it dries the wallpaper tightens and they disappear; wait 48 hours.
  • Bubble that stays: paste was missing or the air was not smoothed out. Prick with a fine needle, inject a little paste, press down.
  • Seam opening: paste dried too early at the edge or a highly absorbent, unprimed substrate. Lift the edge and fix it with seam adhesive.
  • Dark line at the seam: squeezed-out paste has dried and trapped dirt; wipe it off damp immediately when hanging.
  • Shade difference between strips: rolls from different batches or a strip hung upside down. Check batch number and direction arrow; see checking your rolls.
  • Large-area detachment: dusty, greasy or damp substrate, flaking old paint. Remove, prepare the wall, re-hang.
  • Yellow stains: moisture, nicotine or old water marks from the wall; a stain-blocking primer is needed.

Prevention is easier

  1. Clean, sand and prime the substrate: preparing the wall.
  2. Use the right paste and technique: hanging non-woven wallpaper.
  3. Avoid draughts and strong heating during and after hanging.

Frequently asked questions

Do bubbles disappear on their own?

Small bubbles in the first two days usually do. If they remain after a week, rework is needed.

Which adhesive for open seams?

A wallpaper seam adhesive; wipe off any excess immediately with a damp sponge.

Can I replace a single strip?

Yes, if you have a spare roll from the same batch.

Is it the wallpaper's fault if it comes loose?

Rarely. The substrate, the wrong paste or moisture are more common causes.

Does a hairdryer help with bubbles?

No. Heat dries the paste unevenly and can open seams.
