We think of four walls and leave the ceiling white. Yet it is the largest and calmest surface in the room. Designers call it the "fifth wall", and the right wallpaper changes the whole feel of a room.
Where ceiling wallpaper works
- Bedroom: the only surface you see lying down. Calm texture or a delicate pattern.
- Dining room: a stage forms around the light fitting; gold and dark tones are especially effective.
- Kids' room: sky, cloud or star motifs.
- Hallway: a pattern on the ceiling lets the walls of a narrow corridor stay calm.
By ceiling height
- Up to about 2.50 m: light base, small pattern. A dark ceiling feels oppressive.
- From about 2.70 m: dark tones and large patterns make the room cosier.
- Radial and fan patterns, as in Trussardi Casa, seem to radiate from the centre, ideal above a pendant light.
When working
- Choose non-woven: paste goes on the ceiling and the dry strip is applied. Holding wet, heavy paper wallpaper overhead is hard. Technique: hanging non-woven wallpaper.
- Work with at least two people and stable scaffolding.
- Mark spotlights and light outlets beforehand.
- The substrate must be sound; remove old flaking paint first.
Frequently asked questions
Will ceiling wallpaper fall down?
Not with a sound substrate, the right paste and non-woven. Problems usually arise on dusty or flaking ceilings.
Same wallpaper on wall and ceiling?
Yes; the corners disappear and the room feels enveloped, bold but very elegant.
Is it worth it in period homes?
Especially there: high ceilings take large patterns well.
Do you hang ceilings?
In the Stuttgart, Heilbronn and Heidelberg area, yes; see our installation service.
